Vintage Swedish 1960s Black Leather Three Seater Sofa by Ake Fribyter

A Swedish midcentury original, this laid-back leather couch comes low, lean and a little lived in in the best possible way. Vintage leather gets better with age in our view, the wrinkles and marks part of its character and history. This handsome piece is attributed to Ake Fribyter and it ticks all the classic MCM boxes with its clean-lined design and sophisticated silhouette. We love the wooden edge running round the bottom of the frame. The cushions are feather-filled so soft and squidgy, perfect for lounging about on. Leather is a fantastic, hard-wearing option for a busy family home with pets who are allowed on sofas or kiddos who get messy. It’s easily cleaned and upholstery you don’t need to feel too precious about.

Description

This original, vintage sofa is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good, used condition. The sofa has been checked and surface cleaned with a natural, nourishing leather balm. All six cushions are in good order with plump, feather inners and working zips.  The leather carries some light creases, wrinkles and minor marks from use but this is in line with what we would expect from vintage, used leather and very much part of its appeal. One of the cushions has a small repair to the leather that’s around 1cm (please refer to our photo) but the back cushions are double-sided so this can be placed to the back. The fixed leather upholstery on the frame is in good order, hugging the contours. There are light scuffs here and there (do view our photos) and we have shown some specific marks along the top back edge where it’s been set against a wall but this most likely wouldn’t be on show and it’s not hugely noticeable anyway. The canvas underneath the seat cushions has some marks but nothing unsavoury or jarring. The frame itself is solid and stable with no wobbles or joint concerns. It’s very well-made, an authentic Scandinavian piece attributed at source to Ake Fribyter, quite possibly for early IKEA, and it dates from the late 1960s. Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of colour and condition. If you would like to view the sofa or have any questions, please get in touch.
