Vintage Post-war Two Tone Tambour Extending Kitchen Table with CC41 Stamp
This is such an unique piece. At first glance it’s a regular, hard-working, 1940s / 1950s kitchen table. Very well-made, solid and sturdy with neat proportions and chunky, splayed legs. The unusual design detail though is that it can be extended on either side with a rolling tambour mechanism. Pull the sides and the tambour rolls round, flattening out as the halves are pushed back in to create the extra table width on each side. And as you can see from our photos, the original tambour slats are in alternating woods – teak and birch – to create a striking, striped two tone feature at the centre of the table. A weird and wonderful slice of British post-war design, cleverly engineered but most likely quickly usurped by other extending table designs and mechanisms. The CC41 stamp on the table underside tells us it was made specifically between 1941 – 1951, in line with war-time / post-war production austerity regulations, although we’ve not been able to definitively attribute it. It’s a touch taller than your average dining table height and as such we feel it’s more of an every-day, robust kitchen table.
Description
This original, vintage dining table is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in good – very good, used condition. The table has been checked, cleaned throughout and table top has been restored so a partial restoration. This involved carefully stripping the original finish away, oil and then wax polish for a durable finish. The table is extended by simple pulling apart one or both of the sides. The tambour strips roll out and the sides are then pushed back to flatten them into position, creating the extended table top. You can extend one side or both. The mechanism sometimes need a little helping hand – there’s a bit of a knack to it but the tambour rolls back and forth easily. If you would like to see a video of the action, please do let us know and we can share. In line with its considerable age, there are minor signs of aging and wear and tear – light dents, scratches and scuffs here and there to the base and legs but overall, this lovely, vintage table is in great order with a freshly restored top. The underside is CC41 stamped.
