Vintage Late Victorian Oak Bureau with Drawers
This Victorian, light oak, British-made bureau has bags of rustic character and old-fashioned charm. Its proportions may be neat and compact but it provides a great deal of helpful storage and converts to a work station with further space and pigeon holes in the top cabinet. The fall door creates a desk, supported by two pull-out arms on either side. Pull up a chair and you’re set to focus and work. Less space-consuming than a conventional desk, it can be closed when the working day is done. Bureaus are also great options for kids’ / teenagers’ rooms to help them get organised with a dedicated but discreet study area. We love the shiny brass handles on this piece and the top section comes with a lock and key.
Description
This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish has been applied to the external wood but otherwise the original finish has been left alone. All three drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors with light signs of wear. The brass handles are original and securely attached. The top desk section features pigeon holes and the door drops down onto neat, pull-out supports on either side. This creates the writing platform / desk. All hinges are in good working order and the top section comes with a working lock and key. As you can appreciate from our photos, the exterior does carry knocks, scuffs and marks commensurate with its age and purpose. We don’t feel this detracts from its appeal or function but do browse our photos. It’s well put together, solid and stable including when the pull-down desk in place. Sadly there is no maker’s stamp but it’s British in original and dates from the late Victorian / early 20th century period. Questions or wish to view? Just get in touch.
