Vintage 1970s G Plan Teak ‘Fresco’ Tall Sideboard Unit / Highboard
These teak tall sideboards / highboards are of their time, unmistakably midcentury, and perhaps polarise opinion a little. They are large items of furniture and do need space but they have a great deal to offer and tick many practical boxes that modern storage pieces don’t. This fine one from G Plan has a huge amount of storage and display space. Drawers, cupboards, a drinks cabinet and shelves are all here. It dates from the late sixties – early seventies so earlier than the later, chunkier versions made by G Plan and other brands, and we like it all the more for that. The design is rather more refined sitting on long tapered legs and with curves to soften its edges.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in very good – excellent, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned the piece, inside and out, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces. It’s in immaculate, original condition, apart from a small, neat round hole in the back panel, made at some point for wires. Please refer to our photos. This would most likely be covered by display items or books so not particularly troublesome, and actually it is handy if you wished to add a lamp. All doors, hinges and closures are in very good working order. All interiors are clean and tidy. The drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and are in excellent condition. The top drawer featured a lined, sectioned half with removable dividers. The upper, double door cupboard features an adjustable shelf. The drinks cabinet shelf is fixed. Overall, there are only the lightest signs of wear and tear – it’s been very well looked after. It’s extremely well made, solid and stable (it’s worth noting this is a very heavy piece) with no signs of repair. The red G Plan label is in place inside the cupboard door and it even comes with the original purchase receipt, dated 1970!
