Vintage Early Midcentury Danish Striped Two Seater Sofa
Wonderfully eccentric and somewhat bohemian, this 1940s / 1950s, Danish sofa with its combination of swirls, curves and stripes certainly makes a statement… and we love it! It’s in super condition, given its considerable age, with few signs of wear and tear. It’s obviously been well-loved and taken care of. The striped wool is a mix of dark teal, black, mustard and the dominant colour, a burnt orange. With ornate carved arm ends and front legs, it has bags of old-fashioned glamour. The curves and contours of the frame are accentuated by pale mustard braid piping. With two seater proportions and elegant, feminine details, it’s comfortable as well with a firm, sprung seat and a tall, supportive back. If you’ve a taste for the unusual and unique, this is the sofa for you.
Description
This original, vintage sofa is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good – very good, used condition. The piece has been thoroughly vacuumed and on-show wooden frame washed, followed by a natural beeswax polish. The original striped upholstery is a weave of dark orange, teal and black. Considering its years it is in outstanding order, hugging the contours of the frame tightly and with only light signs of wear and tear. There is a small 1cm pull on the seat, shown in our photos, but it’s barely noticeable (we didn’t spot it when we initially cleaned the piece!). There is some very faint colour fading here and there, but again this doesn’t detract from the appeal of the piece. In fact, if anything it adds to its old-fashioned, vintage charm. There are also piped edges and details which, again, are securely attached and in good order. There are knocks, scuffs and dents to the wooden frame, arms and legs. Again though, this wear and tear doesn’t take anything away from the piece. The frame itself is solid and stable (note: despite being small, this is a heavy sofa!) with no creaks or joint concerns. It’s a very well-made piece. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but we’ve imported this sofa directly from Denmark and it dates from around the 1930s. Please our photos for an accurate picture of the super condition of this fine, little sofa.
