Vintage Danish ‘Embassy’ Lounge Chair in Teal Wool by Otto Larsen for Soborg Mobelfabrik
Designed by Otto H Larsen for Søborg Møbler, a highly reputable and long-established Danish fine furniture maker who collaborated with many of the leading midcentury designers of the day from Borge Mogensen to Christian Hvidt. This was the ‘Embassy’ model, a boxy, indulgent lounge chair defined by the straight lines and angles of its mahogany frame. With generous proportions and a profile that’s dramatic from every angle, it’s a chair that everyone will be fighting for sitting rights over! Expertly crafted, just savour the joints at its four corners. The original wool upholstery is a weave of blue and green to create a striking teal that’s in fantastic, bright order throughout. A brutalist beauty, this is a statement chair.
Description
This original, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. The wooden frame has been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied but otherwise the finish is original. There are two cushions, both in very good order with working zips and plump inners. The original teal wool fabric is in great order with no marks or areas of wear, just light signs of use. The fixed upholstery on the frame is also in good order. There is some minor fading tops and arm ends in line with is age and function. The fabric underneath the seat cushion has been cut presumably to check / replace the webbing straps underneath (note: we have not done this ourselves – it’s as acquired). We have shown this in a photo. Obviously this doesn’t show as it’s underneath the cushion and the webbing is in good order too with no concerns. The wooden frame carries some light knocks and surface scuffs including a small shard of wood missing from the back of the front left leg. Please refer to our photo. There are some superficial scratches on the left hand side of the chair which we’ve shown in our photos but they’re only noticeable when they catch the light. This is a beautifully crafted chair that’s solid, stable and substantial with no joint concerns. There is a tiny remnant of the original maker’s label left in place. This is a well-known chair design that we attribute with confidence as we have a matching chair with the label in tact. It’s definitely the Embassy chair by Otto Larsen for Soborg Mobelfabrik. It was imported directly from Denmark and it dates from the early 1970s.
