Large Vintage Arts & Crafts Style 1940s Danish Upholstered Oak Bench
A truly unusual Danish import, this grand, upholstered, light oak bench has a definite Arts & Craft sensibility to its design. The frame is large at over 2.1m in length, stately and traditional, rather a church pew, with a striking panelled wood back and sides. It’s been upholstered in a vivid orange fabric with a bold green and yellow stripe across the surround and seat, and it’s heavily studded around its edges, a feature we love. The upright posture of the design and firmer seat means this isn’t really a lounge sofa but it would be a super dining bench set against a kitchen table. Its compact depth also makes it ideal for an entrance hall or landing as it doesn’t stick out far – it’s long but shallow.
Description
This original, vintage sofa is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. The oak frame has been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied, and the upholstery has had a thorough vacuum. As you can see in our photos, there are some minor marks and faded patches on the seat of the bench. There are also some faded areas on the inner back and arms, primarily on the tops and arm ends as you might expect – again, this is clearly shown in our pictures. That said, there are no threadbare areas, tears or unsavoury stains on the upholstery. All the large brass studs are securely in place around the frame. There are some minor scuffs and scratches to the wooden frame, including an area on the front right hand side, shown in our images. It’s a well-made, heavy weight sofa that cannot be dismantled in anyway. It’s imported from Denmark and dates from the 194os.
