Vintage 1970s Large Teak Bureau by Herbert Gibbs
Reputable British furniture maker, Herbert E Gibbs, made reliable, unfussy home furniture with the emphasis on practicality and function first and foremost. We’re more used to stocking his slimline bureaus and bookcases of the fifties so we were a little surprised to see his name on the back of this substantial later teak piece. It has a very generous desk area with plenty of depth and width so a super piece for the frequent homeworker. Lots of storage both up top and in the cupboard below to get organised and at the end of the day, the desk and work can be closed for home life to takeover.

Description
This original, vintage bureau bookcase is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in good – very good, used condition. The piece has been cleaned, inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied and buffed on the external surfaces, but otherwise the finish is original. The lower cupboard has doors, handles, hinges and closures in good order. There is a fixed shelf inside. As you can see, the interior is clean but it is a little scuffed and scratched on the bottom and also on the inside doors. The fall door creates the desk area when down. All hinges and closures are in good order as is the interior which features a bank of pigeon holes and small stationery drawer. This section is adjustable / removable. Although there is a lock for the desk section, sadly we do not have a key. There are light marks and scuffs here and there on the exterior wood surfaces, minor signs of use in line with its age – we’ve shown some in our photos. In the overall context of the piece, they are not very noticeable and don’t compromise its appeal in our view. It’s a nicely made piece of furniture, as you would expect from H Gibbs, with no areas of concern. The Herbert Gibbs maker’s label is in place on the back. Alternatively, we can arrange fast, UK mainland delivery with our delivery partners who cover most of the country (please enquire for Scotland or remote addresses). They are reliable and insured, and we have worked with them for many years. We have a weekly collection and onward delivery usually follows 1-3 days later. Please be aware the delivery service we can offer does require some flexibility as the drivers work to predetermined routes with other delivery obligations, but they will keep you updated directly regarding their anticipated timings. You are also welcome to collect (we’re based in Haverhill, Suffolk) and we’re happy to hold pieces after purchase while you make collection arrangements and consider your options.
