Vintage 1970s G Plan Sierra Teak Shelf Unit with Desk
Designed by E Gomme for G Plan, as part of the Sierra range, you can see he was influenced by his Scandinavian contemporaries… clean lines, midcentury simplicity, form and function. Freestanding, multi-functional units, such as this smart, 1970s one, are really versatile as they negate the need for built-in shelves and provide plentiful storage and display space. Tall but shallow, this model features an open, upper bookcase, a pull-down desk, and a lower unit with a sectioned drawer and a double door cupboard with a further shelf inside. It’s a two-part piece with the upper section sitting on the deeper base. We love the original, pale green back panel, adding a distinct pop of colour.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned and polished this piece, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. It’s a two part, freestanding piece where the upper section simply sits on the base, however as the function of this particular piece is as a desk, the upper unit should be secured to the wall for piece of mind. Plates are supplied for this purpose. The upper section features two, open, adjustable shelves and the original green back panel which shows though the shelves is in very good order. The pull down door creates the writing desk. There is a little wear on the left handles as shown. The hinges moves with ease and the interior is clean and tidy. It features pigeon holes and a small drawer inside and this section can be height adjusted or even removed if preferred. The lower unit features a partially sectioned and lined drawer and a lower, double door cupboard with a further adjustable shelf inside. The two doors swing with ease and have working closures. The right handle has been repaired at some point – shown in our photos – but it’s a seamless, good quality repair that’s solid and barely noticeable. There is also a small repair to the top right door corner. The design of the hidden door hinges of this particular range mean that if the door is pushed open too wide, stress occurs at this point and can split the wood. This has been remedied and disguised (it’s not hugely noticeable in the over context of the piece). Otherwise, there are minor knocks, sunlight faded patches and scuffs here and there – do refer to our photos. Overall, the wear and tear is light and in line with what we might expect with a vintage piece of this age and nature. The unit is well-made and the G Plan label can be seen on the very top of the piece.
