Vintage 1970s Ercol Windsor Model 468 Sideboard

This medium sized, English elm sideboard by Ercol, dating from the 1970s, is a British design classic from their ever-popular Windsor range.  An expertly crafted piece of furniture with many of Ercol’s signature features on show, it epitomises the form and function aesthetic, where beautiful design meets practicality. The golden wood grain across the exterior surfaces is wonderful. Featuring two generous cupboards (one with double doors, one smaller) and two spacious drawers, it’s still such a versatile piece and would be a welcome addition to pretty much any room, fitting easily in with pieces of other styles and wood types. This particular 468 model was produced from 1962-1985 and it’s a classic with an appeal that endures generation after generation.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out, and the top surface has been refinished, so a partial restoration. This is because one of the wood joins has opened a little here (a common thing with vintage Ercol) along with some dark marks as is often the way with sideboard tops – they bear a lot of the wear and tear. The restoration involved the careful removal of the original finish, the join stabilised, filled and coloured, and then layers of Osmo wax oil and polish to give a durable, authentic finish. As you can see from our photos, the repair is barely noticeable. The finish on the front and sides is all original and in very good order, and we have applied a natural beeswax polish here. All three cupboard doors align and their closures work as they should. Inside the right hand cupboard there is a removable cutlery drawer with adjustable dividers. The main cupboard features a height adjustable shelf. The cupboard interiors have some very light marks from use but  in general, are in very good clean order. Both bottom drawers slide in and out with ease, and the interiors here are in very good order too. The sideboard sits on its original castors which move freely and with ease. There are some very minor knocks and marks on the exterior wood surfaces including a very small dent on the right hand door, shown in our photos. It’s a beautifully crafted piece as you would expect from Ercol in solid wood with dovetail joints and the signature oval inset handles. Sadly the original Ercol label is no longer in place but it dates from the 1970s. Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of its condition and colour.
