Vintage 1950s Teak Bureau Bookcase by Herbert Gibbs

A fine, functional piece from reputable British furniture maker, Herbert E Gibbs. It delivers a lot – discreet, slimline storage, bookshelves and a desk. As was Gibb’s way, its design is unfussy and utilitarian, and as such, it means it’s neutral, easily slotting into any room alongside different styles and pieces. Less space-hungry than a conventional desk, bureaus are great options for kids’ and student rooms to help them get organised with a dedicated but discreet work station that can be closed away. A solid, good value, old-fashioned classic in every sense.

Description

This original, vintage bureau bookcase is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in very good, used condition. The piece has been cleaned, inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied and buffed on the external surfaces, but otherwise the finish is original. The lower bookcase features sliding glass doors and there is a height adjustable wooden shelf inside. The interior here is clean and in good order, and the doors slide easily in their runners. The top section has a working lock and key and features a fall door which creates a desk to work at. Inside there are cubby holes and the interior is in good, clean order. There are light marks and scuffs here and there on the exterior wood surfaces, just minor signs of use in line with its age – we’ve shown some in our photos. In the overall context of the piece, they are not very noticeable and don’t compromise its appeal in our view. It’s a nicely made piece of furniture, as you would expect from H Gibbs, with no areas of concern. The gold maker’s plate is in place on the back.
