Vintage 1960s Ercol Windsor Model 429 Sideboard

This compact, medium-sized, English elm sideboard by Ercol is often incorrectly attributed as the model 468 sideboard but in fact this is a much earlier piece made for just four years between 1958 – 1962. It’s an early version of what was to become the 468 and a special, rarer find with a great deal more character and charm in our humble view. There are many of Ercol’s signature features on show, still seen on their new pieces today… the inset oval handles, the on-show dovetail joins on the corners… but the doors are notably flat (the later 468 has the convex profile) and there is a contoured overhang at the top and bottom edge. An expertly crafted piece of furniture, the patina of the wood grain across the door and drawer fronts is particularly striking and a feature of Ercol’s earlier pieces. We love that there is such rich variation in the whirls and swirls, rather than the more uniform golden look seen on later models. Featuring two generous cupboards (one with double doors, one smaller) and two spacious lower drawers, it comes with a removable cutlery tray too.

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise we’ve left the original finish alone as it’s in such fantastic order throughout. All three cupboard doors align and their closures work as they should. Inside the right hand cupboard there is a removable cutlery drawer with adjustable dividers. The main cupboard features a height adjustable shelf. The cupboard interiors have some very light marks from use but  in general, are in very good clean, tidy order. Both bottom drawers slide in and out with ease, and the internal woodwork here is in very good order too. The sideboard sits on its original castors which move freely and with ease. It’s a beautifully crafted piece as you would expect from Ercol with dovetail joints and the signature oval inset handles. Sadly the original Ercol label is no longer in place.
