Vintage 1960s Chippy Heath Teak Telephone Seat

From the days when a home had just the one landline phone, telephone seats used to be social centre of the modern household. This teak telephone seat dates from the 1960s and was made by British maker, Chippy Heath. It features two small drawers, a space on top for the phone and a bench-style side seat with a cushion for a good gossip down the line. The proportions are neat and compact as they were designed to live in a central spot like the hallway, not taking up precious space. Very much of its time but a really fun, quirky piece that could be put to good use in pretty much any home space – we love it as an over-sized bedside stand or to create a reading corner in a child’s room. But this is still a really handy piece for the entrance hall with a seat for putting on shoes and drawers for keys and life’s ‘stuff’.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned it inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to its exterior surfaces. The two small drawers slide with ease and have clean, tidy interiors. The seat cushion could be easily updated with a new fabric cover or removed entirely with a couple of loose cushions styled on the seat instead. There are minor marks and scuffs to the wood in line with its age and function but overall we would categorise this as ‘light’ – please view our photos. It’s well-made with no signs of repair or areas of concern. The maker’s label is no longer in place but this a well-documented design that we attribute with confidence and date to the late 1960s.
