Vintage 1960s Afromosia Desk by Richard Hornby for Fyne Ladye

For very stylish, extra productive home-working, you need a smart, statement midcentury desk like this! Designed by Richard Hornby for Fyne Ladye in the 1960s, it started life as a dressing table but as is frequently the case, the mirror has been removed at some point across the years and the piece repurposed as a desk. And it makes a magnificent one with lots of storage across seven graduated drawers and a wide, deep expansive worktop, allowing plenty of room for a monitor, lamp, files and more. It’s in great order overall with discreet signs of wear and tear, and plenty of leg room for your office chair of choice. It’s expertly well-crafted in afromosia, a darker wood than the usual teak and a beautifully balanced, considered piece of design as you would expect from Richard Hornby.

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned and polished this desk, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. All seven drawers are well made with lower cut out handles and they slide with ease. Their interiors are lightly marked through use, as we’ve shown. The lower left hand drawer is sectioned, the upper left drawer is velvet lined and the ‘hidden’ central drawer is double-sided (white base one side, black the other) converting from the drawer to a pull-out platform by turning it over. We have carried out some minor repairs, filling small chips and knocks to the exterior wood here and there. This is primarily on the edges and legs and we’ve detailed this in our photos. As you can see, this is discreet and not very noticeable overall. Overall there are light marks, some sunlight fading and scuffs to the external surfaces – again, our photos give a good sense of the order of this fine desk. The wear is commensurate with its considerable age. The desk is very crafted, sturdy and solid.
