Vintage 1950s Walnut Large Double Layer Sewing Table
A large, stylish midcentury sewing box / hobby table that gives you huge amounts of storage with a deep, lidded main compartment that features a sliding, removable, divided tray for threads, ribbons, buttons, etc. And there is a stepped shelf with two further drawers of storage space on the side. We believe this is most likely a Vanson piece designed by Peter Hayward. The main body of the table is identical to a similar model they produced, also in walnut. The slight anomaly are the legs and handles – our hunch is this was an early version, perhaps even a prototype form of their later, more refined version. Either way, it’s a fine-looking piece with a striking, angular profile, unlike regular vintage sewing tables. If sewing isn’t your thing then these pieces make excellent side tables or eccentric bedside stands.
Description
This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the exterior wood but otherwise the finish is all original. Lift the lid of the main compartment to find a clean, tidy interior with a removable, divider tray in place which can be slide back and forth on runners. The hinges and arm are in good working order. To the side are two small drawers with clean interiors, secure handles that slide easily. The black splayed legs feature brass caps. There are scuffs and knocks to the exterior wood surfaces but overall this is minor. It’s a well made, little table with no repairs or areas of concern to report.
