Vintage 1950s Swedish Tambour Door Cabinet with Drawers by Åtvidabergs

There’s something magical about the roll of a tambour door. This vintage cabinet dates from the 1950s and originates from Sweden. Made by Åtvidabergs, who primarily specialised in office furniture, this would have originally been used in an office / workplace environment. In its later years, it was turned upside down (the lock that keeps the tambour door closed had broken – it’s now been replaced with a new working lock as part of our restoration), covered with Formica and used for tool storage in a workshop! We’ve restored it back to what it was but left some of its narrative behind in the blemishes and scars across its surfaces. The tambour door opens to reveal a bank of six removable tray drawers on one side and a further large drawer and open cupboard on the other. It doesn’t get more characterful and endearing than an old, vintage piece like this. Wherever it goes in whichever room, it will charm and find a purpose.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out. The original finish on the exterior surfaces was carefully stripped and it’s been oiled and waxed. Inside the cabinet there is a bank of six removable tray drawers on the left hand side. Overall these are in good order with some light signs of wear and tear. Each drawer has the Atvidabergs stamp inside. The right hand side of the cabinet features a larger drawer at the top with its original brass handle. Its interior is in good order, again with light signs of use. The lower cupboard space is marked with scuffs and rings from bottle, as we’ve shown. The tambour door is in very good working order, rolling back and forth with ease. As is the way with these cabinets once unlocked the door drops quickly. It needs to be locked to remain shut. The lock and key are new and in good working order. The exterior wood, although restored, carries lots of bruises, knocks and marks. We’ve deliberately not tried to remove its history because it’s part of its story and charm. Our photos give a good sense of its condition. The piece is sturdy and solid – it’s very well-made despite its superficial wear and tear. Do browse our photos for an accurate representation of this piece but should you have any queries or wish to view the piece, just give us a shout.
