Vintage 1950s Light Oak Double-sided Bookcase on Castors
This unusual vintage bookcase is a rare find and just the sort of thing we love at Original Homewares! Most likely made for a school or library, this is a large, double-sided book stand that dates from the 1950s. It’s constructed in light oak and comes on castors so can be easily wheeled into position or moved to one side. The height and width of this piece means it would make a fantastic room divider, perhaps in a large open-plan space. Display trinkets and treasures on one side and books on the other. We like the idea of flooding one side with house plants of all shapes and sizes to create a living screen. An eccentric piece of very British, utilitarian furniture that has much charm and heritage, scuffs, marks and all.
Description
This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have lightly cleaned the wood, applying a natural oil to its surfaces but it hasn’t undergone a full restoration. This is because we didn’t want to lose the scuffs and marks on this ‘of its time’ item of furniture. The blemishes and knocks are very much part of its history and charm and sanding them away is not work we would undertake ourselves. It’s a heavy, solidly made, utilitarian piece, designed and constructed to be hard-wearing and robust. It sits on its original castors. These roll with ease and adds to its appeal and practicality in the home – it can be easily moved to one side.
