Set of Six Mid-century Volnay Dining Chairs by John Herbert for A Younger
British manufacturer, A Younger Ltd’s Volnay range designed by John Herbert, first launched in 1956 and was produced for around 10 years, such was its popularity. A Younger was highly reputable and regarded for making small run, expertly crafted, fine quality pieces. It was greatly influenced by its Scandinavian contemporaries and you can see that in these dining chairs in their striking lines. The dark solid afromosia frames create a dynamic silhouette, made even more arresting by the yellow seat pads. Although in perfectly usable condition, if the colour didn’t suit, recovering these would be an easy and inexpensive job for an upholsterer. A really fine set of vintage chairs that straddle both midcentury and more traditional design with their appeal.
Description
This set of six original, vintage dining chairs is ‘sold as seen’. They are in good – very good, used condition. The solid afromosia chair frames have been thoroughly cleaned and a high quality natural wax applied then polished. The chair frames are in very good condition. The upholstered seat pads have been vacuumed and are overall in good condition. Although absolutely fine to use as they are (there are no tears or threadbare areas), they would benefit from being updated at some point as they’re a little grubby because of their rather unforgiving pale colour. There are faint marks on the fabric here and there from use – please refer to our photos – and the carver chair upholstery is particularly sun-faded. It’s clearly sat in the full light of a window. The chairs are superbly crafted, solid and stable with no wobbles. Please refer to our photos for a good sense of their used condition.
