Set of Six 1950s Vintage Modernist Red Ply Stacking Chairs by PEL

British furniture maker, PEL – Practical Equipment Ltd – were a leading manufacturer of industrial furniture, established in 1931 and hoping to follow the success of great Austrian furniture maker, Thonet, but with tubular steel, rather than bentwood. Their chairs in particular continue to appeal because of their modernist, utilitarian designs. This striking set of six stacking chairs combine bent ply, red Formica and black tubular steel. They do come bruised and scarred but this wear and tear is superficial. They still have much to offer. They are a fantastic value set of vintage dining / kitchen chairs, perfect for a household that doesn’t want to be too precious about its dining room furniture. And because they can be stacked and stowed, they also really useful for occasional use… perfect for Christmas, parties and other gatherings.

Description

This original, vintage set of chairs is ‘sold as seen’. All six chairs are in fair, used condition. We have given the chairs a check and clean but otherwise we have left the original finish alone. Do browse our numerous photos – as you can see there are chips, knocks, superficial scuffs and marks across all six chairs. The original black paint finish on the tubular steel frames are also scuffed and worn. However, even though there is wear and tear, these chairs are solidly made, sturdy and with plenty of life left in them. All feet caps are in place along with the plastic spacers to prevent them rubbing when stacked. The PEL label is affixed to most of the chairs.
