Set of Four Vintage Early 1950s Dining Chairs by Gordon Russell

Master craftsman and designer, Gordon Russell is a fascinating figure in the furniture scene of the early to mid 20th century. He dabbled in furniture making in his early years before signing up and heading to France to fight in the First World War. After experiencing its horrors first hand, he returned home to Broadway, Worcestershire a decorated soldier and established Russell of Broadway with his brother and father. He was heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement but was rather more progressive, using machinery and craftsmanship in harmony to create unfussy, well-crafted domestic pieces. This set of four dining chairs are fantastic examples of his early work. What they perhaps lack in design flair (they were made in the post-war austerity years) they make up for with their superior build and quality wood. They are sturdy and solid with a great deal of life left in them, not bad for chairs that are 70+ years old! We have brought them up to date with fresh, new upholstery, a brown / grey herringbone wool that’s hard-wearing and complements the tones of the wood.

Description

This set of four original, vintage chairs is ‘sold as seen’. They are in good – very good, used condition. The frames have been checked, cleaned and a neutral, natural wax polish applied to their wood but otherwise the original finish has been left alone. They carry minor, superficial scuffs and marks here and there, along with some chips at the edges of the curved ply backs on couple of the chairs which we’ve shown in our photos. These areas have been glued and stabilised. The seat pads have been reupholstered with new foam and fabric, a hardwearing, 100% herringbone wool by Moons.  The chairs are solid and sturdy with no wobbles. The Russell of Bromley stamp can be seen on the underside of the chairs. Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of their great condition. Alternatively, we can arrange fast, UK mainland delivery with our delivery partners who cover most of the country (enquire for Scotland or remote addresses) and are reliable and insured – we have worked with them for many years. We have a weekly collection and onward delivery usually follows 1-3 days later. The delivery service we can offer does require a little flexibility as the drivers work to predetermined routes with other delivery obligations, but you would be kept updated directly.
