Rare Vintage 1960s Rosewood & Teak Sideboard by Wrighton
What an outstanding sideboard is. By British fine furniture maker, Wrighton, and dating from the 1960s, it’s a scarcely seen model made in richly grained teak with rosewood cabinet fronts. Its proportions are grand at over 1.8m in width so it packs in a great deal of practical storage across its cupboards and drawers as well as a beautifully restored top surface for styling and display. Originally this would have been the pride of the dining room or lounge and this is reflected in the design. There is a lined cutlery drawer and a fantastic drinks cabinet in the middle, mirror lined and with shelves for glasses and cocktail accessories. Despite its size, the long, tapered legs and curved lower edge create space and room around the piece. It’s an expertly balanced piece of design in fantastic restored condition.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have cleaned the cabinet inside and out, and the exterior wood surfaces have been carefully restored. This process involved the stripping and sanding off the original, worn finish, followed by layers of Danish oil and finished with Gilboy’s all natural polish for a durable finish. The three drawers are very well-made with dovetail joints, original brass handles and clean, tidy interiors. They slide with ease and the top drawer is sectioned and lined, originally intended for cutlery. The central drinks cabinet features a pull down door which is Formica lined to use as a platform for mixing and pouring drinks. The cabinet is mirrored and features three fixed shelves at the back and sides for glasses. The pull down door is secure with hinges and mechanisms in very good working order. And finally the end cupboard features a fixed shelf and has a clean, tidy interior too. The cupboard doors have rosewood veneer fronts and the drawer fronts are finely striped teak. There is light wear to the exterior finish here and there. This is primarily focused on one end where the lower edge and back has been knocked and chipped a little – please refer to our photos. Our restoration has disguised this and of course it’s in an area that wouldn’t necessarily be seen. We would define this as minor and in line with its considerable age. It’s a very well constructed sideboard, expertly crafted, solid and stable. The Wrighton maker’s stamp can be seen inside the top drawer.
