Rare Midcentury 1960s Compact Chest of Drawers by White & Newton

A seldom seen model from British midcentury furniture maker, White & Newton, this neat chest of drawers was designed by Arthur Edwards and dates from the early sixties. Its proportions are particularly appealing – not too big, not too small – and we love the slim-line upper drawers and the long legs. The design is classic MCM with crisp lines and sharp angles accentuated by the shadow gap detail across the drawer fronts and the minimalist steel handles. And don’t be fooled, there are four drawers, not five, as the bottom drawer is double height.

Description

This original, vintage chest of drawers is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. It has been checked, cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is all original. There are four drawers (the lower two drawers are actually one double height drawer) slide with ease, are beautifully made with their original metal handles securely attached and they have clean, tidy interiors. Overall, there is just light wear and tear to the exterior wood surfaces in line with the piece’s age. Do browse our images to get an accurate sense of its super condition. It is very well-made, solid and stable with no areas of concern. There is no maker’s mark in place but it was acquired as part of a matching suite of other White & Newton pieces so we attribute with 100% confidence.
