Pair of Vintage White Tulip Chairs

Quirky, eye-catching and kitsch, everyone is familiar with the tulip chair. It’s a design classic. Originally designed by Eero Saarinen in 1957 for Knoll, they have been copied by many over the decades such is their enduring appeal and iconic status. We’ve acquired this pair and although undoubtedly vintage, we cannot definitively attribute them. Our hunch is they are 1970s / 1980s imitations. They come with quirks, wear and points to note (do browse our extensive photos and read our condition report) but they are nonetheless perfectly usable, solid and stable, ready to add a dash of retro cool to any room.

Description

This original, vintage pair of chairs is ‘sold as seen’. They are in fair, used condition. Please do browse our photos of which there are many to paint an accurate picture. We have gently cleaned the white frames with a non-abrasive solvent. They have a shiny, fibreglass contoured shell seat on a white aluminium, weighted base. They do not swivel. They each have a loose black wool cushion with working zips. There are Velcro strips sewn on the cushion backs and formerly the opposite Velcro strip was affixed to the frame but they are no longer in place. That said, the cushions rest in place well anyway. One of the seat cushions has a couple of small holes on the underside. As you will see in our photos (do browse them well), one of the chairs has had a heavy duty modification to attach the seat to the base. It’s very stable and solid but the two chairs do look different underneath their cushions. There are numerous chips, scuffs and marks to the seat frames and bases. These are shown across our photos. The condition and the fact we cannot date or attribute these chairs is reflected in our price.
