Pair of Vintage Danish ‘Embassy’ Armchairs by Otto Larsen for Soborg Mobelfabrik

This striking pair of statement armchairs were designed by Otto H Larsen in the 1970s for Søborg Møbler, a highly reputable and long-established Danish fine furniture maker who collaborated with many of the leading midcentury designers of the day from Borge Mogensen to Christian Hvidt. These are the ‘Embassy’ model, a boxy, sharp-lined lounge chair defined by the straight lines and right angles of its mahogany frame. With generous proportions both in width and depth, and a profile that’s dramatic from every side, they are chairs that everyone will be fighting over. Superbly crafted, savour the joints at the four corners and the lines viewed from the side and back. The original wool upholstery is a weave of blue and green to create a bold teal that’s bright but not jarring and it’s fantastic, vibrant order across both chairs. These are brutalist beauties, perfect for a midcentury-inspired interior.

Description

This original, vintage chair pair is ‘sold as seen’. Both chairs are in good – very good, used condition. Their wooden frames have been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied but otherwise the finish is original. There are two cushions on each chair, all in very good order with working zips and plump inners. The original teal wool fabric is in great shape with no marks or areas of wear to flag, just light signs of use. The fixed upholstery on the frames is also in good order. There is some minor fading along the tops and arm ends in line with their age and use. The fabric underneath the seat cushions has been cut to check / replace the webbing straps underneath (note: we have not done this ourselves – they are as acquired). We have shown this in photos. Obviously this doesn’t show as it’s underneath the cushions and the webbing is in good order too. The wooden frames carries some light knocks and surface scuffs including a small shard of wood missing from the back of the front left leg on one chair and a dent along the back stretcher of the other. Please refer to our photos. There are some superficial scratches on the chairs’ sides which we’ve shown in our photos but they’re only noticeable when they catch the light. They are beautifully crafted chairs that’s solid, stable and substantial with no joint concerns. The original maker’s label is in place on the underside of one chair and a tiny remnant on the other.
