Pair of Matching Vintage 1940s CC41 Tallboy & Chest of Drawers

This pair of British-made oak pieces are a vintage catch. Dating from the 1940s, they come with bags of old-fashioned charm and character and they still have much to offer – there is so much practical storage across the chest of drawers and tallboy cabinet. Their design is simple and utilitarian but this makes them easy pieces to slot into a mixed style home. They were ‘Commodity Controlled’ produced items, made to comply with the war-time and post-war utility scheme. This was at a time when resources, like wood, were scarce but the demand for essential domestic goods like clothes and furniture continued. They had to be manufactured to strict austerity guidelines. Solidly crafted in oak, they have lasted a lifetime but have many more years of service to go. Originally intended for the bedroom, wherever they go, in whichever room, they will provide welcome, handy storage.

Description

This pair of original, used pieces is ‘sold as seen’. They are both in good, vintage condition. Both items have been checked and cleaned the piece inside and out but otherwise the finish is original and as such they come with some marks, knocks and fading which can be seen across our photos. The drawers of the chest slide with ease, are very well-made with dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors. All the handles are original and securely attached. On the tallboy the two upper drawers slide with ease, are very well-made with dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors. The lower double door cupboard also has a clean interior, along with a fixed shelf. The doors are securely attached with hinges, handles and closures in good working order. The top surfaces on both pieces has taken the brunt of the wear and tear as we’ve shown and the original varnish finish here is a little patchy but overall it’s minor and in line with their considerable age. Both items are well-made and the tallboy is CC41 stamped. They are solid and stable with no repairs or areas of concern. No maker’s mark but British in origin.
