Original Vintage Late Victorian Oak Bureau Desk

This Victorian, oak, British-made bureau has bags of rustic character and old-fashioned charm. Its proportions may be neat and compact but it provides a great deal of helpful storage and converts to a work station with further space and pigeon holes in the top cabinet. The fall door creates a desk, supported by two arms on either side. Pull up a chair and you’re set to focus and work. Less space-consuming than a conventional desk, it can be closed when the working day is done. Bureaus are also great options for kids’ or students’ rooms to help them get organised with a dedicated but discreet study area. We love the shiny brass handles and the spiralling turned legs on this particular piece and the top section comes with a lock and key.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish has been applied to the external wood but otherwise the original finish has been left alone. Both drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors with light signs of wear. The brass handles are original and securely attached. The top desk section features pigeon holes and the door drops down onto mechanised supports on either side which extend as the door falls. This creates the writing platform / desk. All hinges and mechanisms are in good working order and the top section comes with a working lock and key. As you can appreciate from our photos, the exterior does carry light knocks, scuffs and marks commensurate with its age and purpose. We don’t feel this detracts from its appeal or function in any way but do browse our photos. It’s well put together, solid and stable including when the pull-down desk in place.
