Original Norwegian ‘Siesta’ Bentwood Leather Chair by Ingmar Relling for Westnofa
Ingmar Relling’s 1965 ‘Siesta’ chair is a design classic, a midcentury icon. It earned him recognition with the Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing Industry, winning first prize that year and cementing his reputation as a leading MCM designer, putting the Siesta chair on the world stage. Even the White House, back in the day, was furnished with Ingmar Relling’s Siestas! Designed for Norwegian maker, Westnofa, its floating, curvaceous form combines striking good looks with super comfort, its tilt and suspension providing great support. These chairs offer an excellent alternative to bulkier, more traditional lounge chairs as the proportions are compact and slim without compromising on comfort. This one in chestnut brown leather is in particularly excellent condition.
Description
This original piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good – excellent, used condition. The leather upholstery has been cleaned, as has the frame with a natural beeswax polish applied. The original, deep brown leather upholstery is in excellent order on the sectioned, single cushion with plump inners, buttons secured in place and working zips. There are leather wrinkles and signs of light wear and tear, as you might expect with vintage leather, but this is minimal and barely noticeable. Likewise, the finishing canvas underneath and the cord strappings are also in excellent order. The cushion fixes with cord that weaves through the frame and ties at the top. The chair is superbly constructed, solid and sturdy with no wobbles or creaks. There are some very light scuffs and faded patches here and there to the wooden frame. The Wetsnofa maker’s label is still on the frame and we believe, given it’s super condition, it dates from the early 1970s.
