Original Midcentury Ercol Model 472 Chairmaker’s Chair

Ercol’s Model 472 chairmaker’s chair was so called because it showcased the very best of Ercol’s exemplary chairmaking craftsmanship in one piece. Using their favoured combination of elm for the oyster-shaped seat and beech for the back, spindles and legs, its complex design is expertly crafted. It came into production in the 1962 and continued into the eighties with modifications along the way. This particular chair dates from the late 1970s / early 1980s and is characterised by the central back splat and the multiple spindles which continue round under the slim, upturned arms. The proportions are tall, enveloping and generous, making it a really comfortable seat, perhaps by the fire, in a reading corner or in the conservatory. Originally there would have been a shaped seat and back cushion which you can still have custom made to fit but for a more contemporary look, style with small cushions or with sheepskin or a throw. A British midcentury classic and a collector’s piece.
