Original Midcentury Ercol Model 472 Chairmaker’s Chair

Ercol’s Model 472 chairmaker’s chair was so called because it showcased the very best of Ercol’s exemplary chairmaking craftsmanship in one piece. Using their favoured combination of elm for the oyster-shaped seat and beech for the back, spindles and legs, its complex design is expertly crafted. It came into production in the 1962 and continued into the eighties with modifications along the way. This particular chair dates from the late 1970s / early 1980s and is characterised by the central back splat and the multiple spindles which continue round under the slim, upturned arms. The proportions are tall, enveloping and generous, making it a really comfortable seat, perhaps by the fire, in a reading corner or in the conservatory. Originally there would have been a shaped seat and back cushion which you can still have custom made to fit but for a more contemporary look, style with small cushions or with sheepskin or a throw. A British midcentury classic and a collector’s piece.

This original, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked it, cleaned it thoroughly and applied a natural beeswax polish. Otherwise, we have left the original finish alone. As you can see from our many photos, the chair does carry minor knocks, scuffs and signs of use. This is primarily on the spots that bear the brunt of wear and tear – the arms, the top bend, seat, etc. However, we felt the wear didn’t warrant a full restoration and this is reflected in our price. That said, if you did wish to fully refurbish, the great thing about Ercol is it’s solid wood and although labour intensive, their pieces restore really well. The gold Ercol label is underneath the chair. The original cushion poppers are in place underneath and on the inside curve of the back. They are easily unscrewed if you don’t plan to have cushions made.
