Midcentury 1960s White & Newton Extending Teak Dining Table
This grand table with generous, extending proportions is perfect for assembling friends and family. British-made by renowned furniture maker, White & Newton, in teak, it dates from the late 1960s and it’s been well loved as it’s in great condition. It’s unusual in that its extension is so large – at full length, it’s over 2.1m. It could comfortably seat up to 8 – 10 people depending on chair size. And yet in regular mode, it’s a ‘standard’ size dining table so this is a great option for homes that like to entertain but don’t have the space for a permanent big table. The extension is integrated into the centre of the table. Pull the two sides apart and with a clever, rotating mechanism, an extra section is added. The teak is in fantastic order with rich, golden tones and patination. We love the robust, substantial design of this table very much, especially the cylindrical legs and the chunky table edges. It’s a lovely change to the usual midcentury features we see in dining tables.
Description
This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied. There are some minor scuffs and marks to the table top and the legs, but overall this is light and superficial, in line with the table’s age and function. The two sides pull apart (this is best done with two people) to reveal the extension integrated inside. With a simple rotation, this folds out and flattens. The two halves are then pushed back for a seamless table top. The mechanism and runners are all in very good working order. We have shown in our photos that one of the small gold pins is missing that slots into the other half of the table. This isn’t visible when the table is closed, nor does it affect the table top or cause the two halves to slip open at all. Similarly, we’ve also shown some scuffs to the extension’s edge, where it’s rubbed against the pins (as a result of the table not being opened quite enough to flatten the extension). Again, this is barely visible when the table is closed. Please refer to our photos. The extension is a touch darker than the two table halves, a common occurrence with vintage tables, quite simply it’s less used and has had less sunlight exposure. This dining table has been well cared for. It’s very well made, solid and stable, and worth noting, it’s a heavy, substantial piece. The White & Newton maker’s label can be seen on the extending section. Please do browse our photos for an accurate sense of its great order. Note: we’ve added felt floor protectors to the feet which you can see in our photos – they can be easily removed if not required.
