Midcentury 1960s Walnut, Beech & Ply Table Set by Peter Hayward for Vanson

This trio of midcentury side tables is really rather special in our view. With a bench-like design, the larger, plank table houses two small, square tables underneath. The table tops are darker, finished with a richly grained walnut veneer on thick ply with a bevelled edge, and the base and splayed legs are blond beech. With a minimalist look that’s both of its time and contemporary, the quality of materials, the build and the design is of the highest quality. We’ve found it hard to definitively attribute them (there is sadly no maker’s mark) but looking at the key features and construction, we strongly believe them to have been designed by Peter Hayward, most likely for Vanson. Not only did he work a lot with walnut veneer and ply but the unusual cut / angles of the wood on the inside of the legs is a key feature of his. And to this end, it would date the table set to the late 1950s / early 1960s.

Description

This is an original, vintage set of three tables that is ‘sold as seen’. They are in very good, used condition. The tables have been checked and cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied but otherwise their finish is original. There have been two small veneer repairs to the large table top. This is at the edge, it’s discreet and it’s been expertly done (we didn’t do this repair ourselves). Other than this, there are minor signs of wear and tear, just superficial, light signs of use. Each table is beautifully crafted, each very well-made with no wobbles or joint concerns.  Frustratingly there is no maker’s mark but our research has lead us to settle with confidence on Peter Hayward for Vanson. The superior quality of their construction, the materials and key design elements have all contributed to this conclusion.
