Midcentury 1960s G Plan ‘Brandon’ Walnut Glass Front Bookcase

Lots of midcentury, glass front book shelves pass through our doors, their appeal enduring, but this one designed by VB Wilkins for E Gomme is a cut above in our view. Designed as part of his 1950’s Brandon range which continued production into the late sixties, unusually this is crafted in walnut rather than the pale oak of most Brandon pieces. And the vertical stripes of its grain are wonderful. This piece is in fantastic, original order with an upper bookcase and an adjustable glass shelf inside, along with a double door cupboard below for hiding things away. It’s the angles and the thoughtful craftsmanship that elevates this piece. We love how the angled sides pour down from the top and the cut-away at the base.

Description

This original, vintage unit is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned it and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. The two glass doors slide with ease in their runners, as do the lower cabinet doors. All interiors are clean and tidy with just light signs of use. There is an adjustable glass shelf too. There are some minor scuffs and dents to the external finish, primarily on its lower extremities where it’s been knocked a little in passing.  It’s very well-made, and sturdy with no signs of structural repair or areas of concern. Sadly there is no maker’s label in place but we attribute it with confidence as it’s a well-documented piece.
