Midcentury 1960s Fyne Ladye Afromosia Dining Table by Richard Hornby

This beautifully crafted and very elegant extending dining table was designed by Richard Hornby for renowned British furniture makers, Fyne Ladye, in the 1960s. Fyne Ladye almost exclusively used afromosia, an African hardwood, that’s darker and less orange than teak but it became scarcer from 1962 as costs to import it made its use prohibitive. Given its age, the table is in fantastic condition – it’s clearly been taken care of. When in regular mode, it’s a neat size, comfortably accommodating four. But it extends to just over 1.8m so there is room for many more guests. As such, it’s a versatile piece, ideal for a dining space where a permanent large table would be too dominant but you need that option occasionally.

Description

This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied. There are some minor scuffs and marks to the table top and the legs but overall this is light and superficial, in line with the table’s age and function. The two sides pull apart to reveal the extension hidden inside. This is then pulled out in its entirety and slotted onto pegs on each side. The two halves are then pushed back for a seamless table top. The mechanism and runners are all in very good working order. The extension is a touch darker than the two table halves,  a common occurrence with vintage tables, quite simply it’s less used and has had less sunlight exposure. This dining table has been well cared for. It’s very well made, solid and stable. There is no maker’s mark in place but this is a well-known design and we attribute it with 100% confidence.
