Late Victorian Vintage Open Bookcase with Adjustable Shelves
A handsome antique piece providing plentiful storage for books and treasures. Constructed in dark stained oak, it comes scarred and bruised with age and use but this is a well made, vintage bookcase and with that aging comes considerable character and charm. The three shelves are height adjustable with a clever system – on either side there is a shaped peg that can be moved up and down notches. Simple but very effective. British-made and dating from the late 19th century / early 20th century.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition, given its considerable years. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise we’ve left the original finish alone to retain its character and aged appeal. As you can see from our photos, there are chips, scuffs and scratches across its surfaces very much in line with its age and function. It’s solidly made with a rather unfussy design so we wonder if it was originally in a library or educational institution. The three inner shelves can be height adjusted with a clever, discreet mechanism where wooden insets are moved up or down in notches and the shelf rests on top.
