Large Midcentury 1960s Walnut Sideboard by Morris of Glasgow

As mid century sideboards go, this is surely one of the most handsome. Made by the renowned Morris of Glasgow furniture makers, it dates from the 1960s and is beautifully crafted in walnut. The darkly striped grain across its exterior surfaces is exquisite. With an immaculately balanced design, so important with large pieces of wooden furniture like this, every detail has been carefully considered and executed from the long inset legs, to the angled ‘beehive’ drawers to the placement of different wood tones and patterns. Although a large piece at just shy of two metres in width, it’s elegant and clean-lined. An outstanding example of the midcentury ‘form and function’ aesthetic with lots of practical purpose.

Description

This original, vintage sideboard is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in very good, used condition. The piece has been cleaned, inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied and buffed on the external surfaces, but otherwise the finish is original. The three, centred ‘beehive’ drawers slide with ease, have clean interiors and are well-made with dovetail joins. The top drawer is sectioned and green felt-lined for cutlery. The left hand cupboard features a fall door and internal shelf, designed for bottles. The right hand cupboard features a recessed shelf which can be removed. All hinges, closures and handles are in very good order and both cupboards have clean, tidy interiors with just light signs of use.  There are light marks and dents here and there on the exterior wood surfaces, very minor signs of use in line with its age. There are some small superficial blemishes on the top surface – we’ve shown these in our photos and in the overall context of the piece they are not particularly noticeable. It’s an expertly crafted piece of furniture, very well-made, thoughtfully designed and sturdy. There is no maker’s stamp but this is a well-documented Morris of Glasgow piece that we attribute with 100% confidence. Do browse through our photos for an accurate sense of its superb condition.
