Large 1970s Vintage G Plan Fresco Shelf Storage Wall Unit with Drinks Cabinet

Designed by VB Wilkins for G Plan, as part of his late sixties / seventies ‘Fresco’ range, this large, double width freestanding unit serves as storage and shelf space in one. Tall and wide but shallow in depth, it’s a multifunctional piece incorporating lower cupboards, a fall-door drinks cabinet, a glass-front bookcase along with open shelves. Indeed, you could create a stunning, statement feature wall with this piece. It’s comprised of three parts – two upper shelf sections which sit on top of the wide, low base unit. Furthermore, there are two hidden lights within the upper sections, one in the drinks cabinet and one that illuminates the open shelf. You can opt to plug these in or not as required. All electricals have been PAT tested for compliance of course. It comes in fantastic original condition and it’s a British midcentury classic.

Description

This is an original, vintage unit that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked, cleaned and polished this piece, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. It’s a three part, freestanding piece where the two upper shelf sections rest on the base unit. Brackets and screws are provided to secure the upper units to the base. The right upper unit in our photo features a fall-door drinks cabinet with a mirrored interior and a contoured glass shelf that’s adjustable. There is an internal light which has been rewired and PAT tested. There is a further wooden shelf above the cabinet which is also height adjustable. The left upper unit features a glass front bookcase with an adjustable shelf inside. The glass doors slide with ease in their runners and the interior is clean and tidy. There is a another wooden shelf below that’s also adjustable. There is a further hidden light below the bookcase, illuminating the shelf below, and this has been rewired and PAT tested too. The double-width base unit features two cupboards both with adjustable shelves and clean interiors. The doors, hinges, handles and closures are in very good order. There are some light knocks, faded areas and superficial scratches to the exterior surfaces and shelf tops but this is minor – please refer to our photos. Obviously you could opt to swap which side the upper units are on. Overall, the wear and tear is light and in line with what we might expect with a vintage piece of this age and nature. The G Plan label can be seen on top of one of the upper units and inside the lower cupboard door. It’s very well made with no signs of repair or areas of concern.
