Antique 19th Century Mahogany Secretaire Chest

It’s impossible to not be charmed by a piece of this age and character. Dating from the end of the 19th century, what a life this antique chest has seen and it’s still going strong, perhaps for another 150 years. Hidden behind the top drawer is a desk, revealed when the drawer is pulled out and folded down to create the writing platform, along with pigeon holes and miniature drawers for stationery storage. Pull up a chair to focus and work. Below are three graduated drawers providing plentiful further storage. The deep, rich tones of the mahogany with the original brass pull handles give grandeur and gravitas to this practical, ‘working’ piece. The great appeal of an old-fashioned, antique like this is in its marks and scuffs. So much history and life is captured across its surfaces.

Description

This original, used piece is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good, vintage condition. We have cleaned the chest applying a natural, light beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise left the original high gloss polished finish alone as it’s in overall good order given its age. The three lower drawers slide with ease, have the original brass handles securely attached and are beautifully made in solid wood with dovetail joints. There is blue lining canvas adhered to the bottom of each drawer which is a little old and discoloured (please see our photo). It’s difficult to remove so we would suggest adding new liners on top if it troubles you. The top drawer pulls out to reveal the desk. There are brass push fittings on each side which lets the drawer front flatten to create the writing desk. Inside are pigeon holes and three miniature drawers for stowing stationery. All the brass hinges and mechanisms in this section are in excellent working order and wonderfully crafted. The interior here is clean and tidy. The exterior wood does carry knocks, fading and chips across all sides. This can be clearly seen in our photos. It’s superficial though and in line with its significant age, adding to its character and charm in our view.
