Vintage 1970s Mann Egerton Military Bookcase / Cabinet with Desk

If you’re looking for an all-in-one office set-up, perhaps if you’re a student or work from home, then this has it all. Desk, shelves, drawers plus a lockable sections. An ex-military piece that’s 50+ years old, this was commissioned for use in barracks, bases and service establishments. Made by Mann Egerton, it’s extremely robustly constructed (it’s heavy!) as you might expect for a high-use, functional unit in that kind of environment. The design is rather industrial and utilitarian but there is a distinct nod to the aesthetic of the day. It’s not without midcentury character. A wonderful piece of heritage and history, as well as practical for the modern home. Of course you wouldn’t have to continue to use it as a desk – it can be serve well as a tall sideboard with the bureau repurposed as a drinks cabinet.

Description

This is an original, used piece that is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in good, vintage condition. The piece has been cleaned inside and out and we have applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. There are six drawers in total. They are wonderfully crafted with dovetail joins and inset handles. They slide easily and have clean tidy interiors. The top right open section features an adjustable shelf. The larger lower left open section features a fixed shelf. The fall door moves with ease and has hinges in good working order. When down this forms the desk. Inside there is a further fixed shelf. There are some light marks and scuffs from use to the desk area but this is minimal as shown. The exterior wood surfaces carry minor knocks, chips and faded patches which can be seen across our numerous photos but this was intended as an every-day working piece so is to be expected and in line with its age. In the overall context of the piece, we would describe the wear and tear as light. It’s very well-made, very sturdy and solid. There are two working locks and a key. It’s worth noting this is a particularly heavy item (no bad thing!) so do be mindful of this especially if you are considering it for upstairs or if access is tricky. It cannot be disassembled.
