Original Mid-century Swedish Blue Striped Velvet ‘Elegant’ Sofa by Lennart Bender

Here’s a wonderfully tactile and inviting, vintage Swedish sofa in its original, cool-but-not-cold, mid-blue velvet. The look and feel of this couch is relaxed, laid back and easy-going. We love the roll of the arms, accentuated by the outer seam placement. Designed by Lennart Bender, this is from the ‘Elegant’ lounge suite range he created for IKEA in the late sixties. Back in the day, IKEA wasn’t the mass-produced, flat-pack furniture monster that it is now. Founded from humble beginnings in 1943, it collaborated with many leading furniture designers, including Bender and Wortz, to produce well-crafted, top quality, midcentury pieces that are now prized and collected today. This teak-framed piece is in quite remarkable order given its years including the striped upholstery. This would suit a busy, family space where you want a characterful, welcoming sofa to kick back on without the need to feel too precious about it.

Description

This original, vintage sofa is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition with wear and tear in line with its considerable age. It has been checked and the teak on-show lower frame cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied but otherwise the original finish here is original and has been left alone. There are six cushions in total – three seat and three back cushions. All cushions are in  good order with plump inners, working zips and secure buttons. The fixed upholstery on the frame and the quilted cloth underneath the cushions is in good order too. As is the way with vintage velvet, there are numerous flat spots and indentations to the pile across the sofa’s surfaces. This can be clearly seen across our many photos. There is also some light fabric wear to the arm ends, commonly the points that bear the brunt of wear and tear – please refer to our photos. Overall, the sofa is very well-made, solid and sturdy with no wobbles or areas of concern. Although no maker’s mark, this is a documented design, the ‘Elegant’ sofa by Lennart Bender for IKEA, and dates from the late sixties / early seventies.
