Vintage Early 20th Century Art Deco Light Oak Tallboy / Batchelor Chest
Somewhere between a tallboy and a bureau is this smart antique piece, a batchelor chest. Art Deco in origin, dating from 1920s – 1930s, it’s crafted in pale oak with beautiful golden patination across its surfaces. A multi-functional piece, the top door falls to reveal a small writing desk with space for papers and letters. And below are three spacious, graduated drawers. There are some super Art Deco design details from handles to the curved edges to the chunky feet. Originally intended for a bedroom or dressing room, this wouldn’t look out of place in a hall, living room or family space.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked, cleaned and polished this piece, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. The three lower, graduated drawers slide with ease, are well-made with dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors. All handles are in good order and securely attached, and the top drawer is sectioned. The upper cupboard features a fall door which creates a writing desk with green leather inlay. The interior has fixed dividers and is clean and tidy inside too. There is a working lock and key for this section. The exterior surfaces do carry knocks, chips, marks and signs of aging as you would expect with a piece of this significant age. Do refer to our photos for a accurate sense of its order. Overall, we feel the wear is minimal and very much part of its unique character and history. It’s purely superficial and doesn’t affect the function of the piece. It’s very well-made, solid and stable.
