Large Antique George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers with Brass Handles

A grand, square front, antique, Georgian chest of drawers in beautiful, richly toned mahogany. Check out the animal-printesque stripes across the drawer fronts. With five generous, graduated drawers, in a two over three configuration, there’s ample storage space here. The round, hanging brass handles are original and it sits on elegant, curved feet. This is a very old piece that comes scarred and bruised on all its surfaces – do browse through our photos for a good sense of this – but we love the imperfections of the antique timber and the history it holds. For all the marks and knocks, it’s very well-made and has already proved its longevity. Full of old-fashioned character and charm, it has a great deal to offer.

Description

This antique, used piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in fair – good, rustic condition. It has been cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the external wood but otherwise the original finish has been left alone. As you can see from our photos, the mahogany wood is marked, chipped and scarred across all its surfaces with some areas of border trim missing. We feel this wear only adds to the appeal and character of such an aged piece but we know this isn’t for everyone – please do browse our photos. All five drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and have the original brass handles securely in place. The ring pull of the left handle on the first / top large drawer is missing. As you will appreciate from our photos, the handle design means this isn’t noticeable and the drawer can still be easily slide in and out using just the handle on the right. Sadly it would be very difficult to source an exact replacement handle or pull. The drawer interiors were lined decades ago with blue paper which is still in place. We would perhaps recommend adding your own liners over the top. The back of the dresser has been patched up a little at some point as shown but obviously this isn’t visible when positioned against a wall. The two sides have been painted at some point too – again, this isn’t particularly noticeable and we’ve shown it in our images, along with small splits down either side. This doesn’t indicate structural problems – it’s simply very old wood that’s dried out and opened up a little. Overall, the knocks and bruises are superficial and just skin-deep. It’s well made, solid and stable with much still to offer. There is no maker’s mark but its origins are British. Sadly, we do not have a key for the brass locks.
