Original Traditional Japanese Wooden Kokeshi Doll – Medium #2

Kokeshis are a Japanese symbol of good luck and good fortune. Traditionally crafted in wood, these beautiful dolls have an over-sized head and simple, cylindrical bodies. They are hand-painted, most commonly in bold reds, blacks and greens, and signed by the artist underneath, each one unique and different to the next. With expressions ranging from sweet to bemused to happy to enigmatic, they are tactile, sculptural things. This is one of the loveliest we’ve seen with a mix of stripes and engraved relief patterns on her body, and a stunning face in black and grey with just the lips in red. We love the sweep of the brush strokes here. Display individually or group several together for a bigger, colourful impact.

Description

This authentic, wooden kokeshi is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. It has been checked, carefully cleaned and polished with a natural beeswax, otherwise it is sold in its original condition so there are minor marks and scuffs, and a little sunlight fading. Due care should be taken when maintaining your kokeshi – the paint can smear if a wet cloth is used. Do browse through our photos but get in touch if you’d like to view or have any questions.
