Vintage 1960s Beaver & Tapley ‘Multi Width’ Teak Bookcase & Bureau by Robert Heritage

Designed by Robert Heritage for furniture maker, Beaver & Tapley Ltd in the 1960s, as part of its ‘Multi-width’ range, this is a classic piece of British midcentury. It’s a clever and practical item, wide but shallow, an all-in-one work station with a fall-door bureau and pigeon holes for your papers. Just pull up a chair to focus and work. This is combined with a glass-front bookcase and double lower cupboards providing plentiful storage. You can see the Scandinavian ‘form and function’ influence with its sleek, clean lines, but these are partnered with more traditional design elements like the cut of the legs and the brass ‘blade’ handles on the lower sliding doors. We love the pinstripe of the wood grain across the exterior surfaces. If you don’t have space for a conventional desk with drawers, this cabinet could be the perfect compromise. It’s super shallow depth won’t intrude into the room.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have cleaned the piece inside and out, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise the original finish has been left alone so there are minor marks, scuffs and light areas of sunlight fading. Overall the wear is minimal and not particularly noticeable, very much in line with the item’s considerable age and function. Please refer to our photos for an accurate sense of this piece’s order. There are some light marks on the top surface where things have been rested. The two glass doors with cut-away handles slide with ease in their runners and the interior is clean and tidy. There is an adjustable shelf here. The lower cupboards also have sliding doors that move freely in their grooves and the cupboard interiors are clean. It’s well made with no signs of repair or areas of concern. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer in place but we attribute this piece with absolute confidence.
