Art Deco-style Vintage 1960s Sideboard by CWS Ltd
We love grand, old pieces like this British sideboard, more traditional in design and with an unmistakable nod to the Art Deco aesthetic of a few decades before. Made by CWS Ltd, which stood for Co-operative Wholesale Society, their designs were practical and rather utilitarian like much post-war homeware and furniture. Superbly crafted, heavy and substantial with a tremendous amount of space inside, we love the inset central cupboard with its striped front. It significantly taller than your classic midcentury sideboard but more compact in width. A super piece, perfect for the period home.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned it inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to its exterior surfaces but otherwise the finish is all-original. There are three upper drawers with the central one sectioned and felt-lined. They are very well-made, slide with ease, have secure handles and clean interiors. Below are three cupboards, each featuring a removable shelf, secure handles, clean interiors, and hinges and closures in good, working order. Understandably there are signs of aging to the exterior surfaces. As you can see, this is primarily sunlight fading, seen most prominently on the left hand cupboard door. There is a little cracking to the finish on the handles as shown. It’s minor though and overall, this kind of wear is what we might reasonably expect with a piece of this considerable age. There is also a minor chip on the side back edge as we’ve shown. Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of condition. It’s very well-made with no signs of repair or areas of concern. The CWS Ltd plate is inside the door.
