Vintage Very Early Model 430 Ercol Bureau / Serving Cabinet
This particular vintage piece is a rare and wonderful thing. A very early version of Ercol’s popular tall serving cabinet, this Model 430 pre-dates the more commonly seen Model 469 which continued to be made through to the nineties. In production for just four years, this piece dates specifically to 1958-1962 and it’s notable because of its flatter front and overhanging trim at the top and bottom. The later 469 was updated with a convex profile and more refined lines. Given the age of this cabinet, it’s condition is absolutely outstanding. It’s been taken great care of with just the lightest signs of use. They were marketed as ‘serving cabinets’ and looking at original Ercol brochures, they were intended for the dining room or kitchen for plates, cutlery, condiments, etc. Nowadays, more often than not, they’re used as bureaus as you can pull up a chair to work or used as a drinks cabinets. Either way, it’s a multi-functional, versatile piece giving a lot of storage space and its neutral design means it could be used in any room from kitchen to bedroom or study.
Description
This original, used piece is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good – excellent, vintage condition. We have cleaned the cabinet, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces but otherwise left the original finish alone as it’s in such exceptional order. It features Ercol’s signature visible dovetail joints on the top corners with the doors and fall fitted with full length hinges. The top cabinet interior is sectioned with one larger fixed shelf and one small adjustable one, and is in clean, tidy order inside. The lower two-door cupboard also has a single adjustable shelf. The doors swing with ease and both have working closures. There is a full width drawer at the bottom which slides with ease and it sits on the original shepherd castors to give good mobility. All interior wood is in very good – excellent, clean order, with just light signs of use. Likewise, the exterior wood is in fantastic order too, with only very minor marks here and there as you might expect of a vintage piece.
