Original Art Deco Oak Console Table with Drawer
A mainstay of the bygone home, console tables were positioned at a central point in the home, a place for every-day items to be stored and stowed until you next left the house. Often found in the hallway or entrance hall, its where keys, hats, bags were left and where the telephone resided. These days, with our rooms becoming more open-plan and multifunctional, the role of the hallway console table has transitioned to become an occasional piece for any room, ideal for a lamp, plants, books and display. This is a really handsome and neatly proportioned oak table with wonderful Art Deco features such as the cut-away, horizontal trim across the front and sides, the brass capped feet on the square legs, and the large statement brass handle taking centre position. It comes a little bruised but that can be forgiven for all its character and history we think.
Description
This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in good, used condition. It has been cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied to the external wood. As you can see from our photos, the table top in particular carries marks, knocks and scuffs, in line with its considerable age and function. If you run your hand across the table top, you can feel slight undulations to the surface where the veneer has lifted a little here and there but it’s not really noticeable to the eye, only when felt. The drawer slides with ease and has a clean, tidy interior. There is the most handsome Art Deco handle in place on the front. This is original. The legs have their four matching brass caps in place. The table is nicely made, solid and table with no wobbles or joint concerns. It’s just somewhat old and worn but we love its design and character.
