Midcentury 1960s William Lawrence Teak Chest of Drawers

This chest of drawers is a fantastic example of original, midcentury British design and it dates from the late 1960s. Designed and made by William Lawrence of Nottingham, it has unusual, sled legs and drawer fronts with integral handles, creating clean, unfussy lines and a minimalist look. With four deep, large drawers, this would fit into a bedroom or family space, mixing easily with furniture of other styles and periods. It’s made in teak and afromosia to give subtle distinction across its lines and surfaces. It’s beautifully designed and beautifully crafted. And this particular model doesn’t come around often – this is only our second in around four years. A much sought-after piece.

Description

This original, vintage chest of drawers is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. The item has been cleaned inside and out and the top surface stripped, oiled and waxed, so a partial restoration. The four drawers are very well made, sliding with ease, with solid fronts, dovetail joints and clean interiors, apart from one which sadly has an old ink stain in the base. Across drawer fronts there are very light signs of wear and tear but there is a discreet repair on one handle bar to flag. The repair has been well done and is barely noticeable – see our photo. As mentioned, the top has been restored so is in very good order and the sides and legs have cleaned with a natural beeswax polish to restore their shine and nourish the wood. There are some very minor scuffs and marks to the exterior wood, but overall this is light and in line with the piece’s age. It’s a very well constructed piece, solid and stable, and the maker’s stamp is in the top drawer.
