Vintage 1950s Ercol Windsor Model 366 Sideboard
These early Ercol sideboards have such character. It’s not hard to imagine a 1960’s modern home with a nuclear family bustling around this classic piece of retro furniture. This rare model, in super original condition, is much sought after with its neat proportion and its splayed beech legs which give it a lighter, less bulky look than later Ercol sideboards. It was designed in 1962 and produced up to 1970 so this old dame comes with heritage and history. The cupboard and drawer fronts have a flatter / flusher design. Considering its years and purpose, it’s in great order, a testament to Ercol’s fantastic craftsmanship and the hard-wearing solid wood construction. The cabinet is made from solid English elm with Ercol’s signature exposed dovetail joints and those Windsor design oval handles. Each cupboard has a full width, adjustable shelf and the right cupboard has a removable butler’s cutlery drawer with dividers. Such a practical piece of design offering lots of storage, it’s as useful today as it was back in that 1960’s family home.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. It has been cleaned inside and out, and a natural beeswax polish applied but the original finish has otherwise been left alone, and so there are marks and blemishes here and there. We always carefully consider how much or how little to restore a piece as we’re believers that vintage pieces should show signs of their former lives – in our view this is part of their considerable appeal. After deliberation, we felt that a full restoration of this piece would be too invasive and would strip away its character. However, this is just our view. The great thing about Ercol furniture is that it’s solid wood so if you wished to restore this piece, either fully or partially, you have that option. All cupboard doors swing with ease with hinges and closures in good order. Likewise, the lower drawer slides with ease. All the interior wood is clean and tidy, with just a few rings and marks. The cupboards feature height adjustable shelves with the original shelf pegs in place. The right-hand cupboard features a removable butler’s drawer which has removable dividers for cutlery. The external wood is also in good order. The top surface carries the main wear and tear and as you can see in our photos there are some faint ring marks and scuffs to the finish here, particularly along the front edge. Sadly the Ercol dark blue sticker is no longer in place in the back.
