Original 1970s G Plan Form 5 Shelf Unit with Cupboards & Drawers
Freestanding shelf units, such as this handsome, late 1960s / early 1970s one, are versatile pieces as they negate the need for built-in shelves. Designed by R Bennett for G Plan, as part of his popular Form 5 range that launched in 1967, he took inspiration from his Scandinavian contemporaries. And you can see that here… clean lines, midcentury simplicity, form and function. Tall but shallow, this model features an upper cupboard, two adjustable shelves, two small drawers and a lower cupboard – combining lots of hidden storage with display surfaces. This unit would work well in the alcove by a chimney breast, and its unfussy, parred back design means it won’t compete with furniture from other genres or woods of different tones.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned and polished this piece, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood. The two upper cupboard doors open and close with ease with closures in good working order, and the interior is clean and tidy. There are two open shelves, which can be adjusted. The two small drawers have clean interiors and slide with ease. The base unit features a double, sliding door cupboard with integrated ‘hidden’ handles and the Form 5 signature design on the door mechanism. Both doors slide with ease. The upper section is designed to simply sit on top of the base unit. It’s not fixed or secured in place but for peace of mind you may choose to add some discreet plate brackets for added stability. The external wood does carry some light marks, scratches and scuffs from wear and tear, in line with its age and function, but overall this is minor. Please refer to our photos. The unit is very well constructed, solid and sturdy with no signs of repair. Remnants of the G Plan label can be seen inside the lower cupboard.
