Rare Midcentury 1950s Interplan Unit K Rosewood & Mahogany Sideboard by Robin Day for Hille

This particular sideboard is something rather special. Designed in 1954 as part of Robin Day’s Interplan range for Hille Furniture, this is the Unit K sideboard. It expertly mixes three different woods – a blond beech base and legs, a mahogany frame and stunning rosewood sliding doors. And the design is beautiful simplicity. It’s classic, clean, parred back midcentury design at its very finest. Slide the doors to find a cutaway shelf for bottle storage and on the right, there are four, neat removable drawers. And did you notice the brass recessed handles? A particularly classy note of distinction. A collectors’ piece that sums up the ‘form and function’ midcentury aesthetic perfectly.

Description

This authentic, vintage sideboard is ‘sold as seen’. Overall it is in good – very good, used condition. It has been cleaned inside and out, and the exterior mahogany frame has been stripped, oiled and polished, a partial restoration. Both doors slide with ease in their runners. The right hand side features a fixed, cutaway shelf. The left hand side features four, beautifully made small drawers, designed to be removable. There are recessed handles with brass insets. The interior is clean and tidy with some scuffs and light signs of use. And the same can be said for the exterior surfaces – there are scuffs and marks here and there, light signs of wear and tear, very much in line with its age and purpose. It’s well-made, solid and stable. The Hille maker’s plate can be seen inside.
