Vintage 1940s Leather Suede Gymnasium Pommel Horse
Sometimes we come across a vintage item that’s leftfield but irresistible. This old pommel horse is just such a piece. Battered and somewhat bruised, it comes with a great deal of character and charm, even if it’s a challenge relating it to today’s homes. In the right space it could make a real impact with its rather sculptural form and its weathered patina. It’s also a lot of fun! Of course, the obvious spot would be a spacious, modern home gym, with this old, pommel horse adding a distinguished nod to the past. Or perhaps a large hallway for piling coats and bags onto, reinvented as a work horse. Kids would also have a hoot clambering over this, playing horsey in a playroom. Someone will have just the right spot and job for this wonderful, old thing.
Description
This is an original, vintage item that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall good, used condition, structurally sound but carrying significant wear and scuffs. We’ve given the legs a scrub but have left the weathered, chipped paint in place – it forms such a big part of its character. The legs can be lengthened to further raise the height. The original rubber feet and iron hoops are at the base of each leg. The suede top is in great shape with no marks, tears or repairs. Sadly there is no maker’s mark in place but there is a strong chance it was made by Niels Larsen & Sons – the features, fittings and construction are identical to others we’ve seen. It dates from the 1940s / 1950s. Please do browse our photos for a good sense of its order. It should be noted this is a heavy item that cannot be dismantled.
